Turmmusiken

(1987), for two trumpets. 7 minutes.

Turmmusiken is a set of five short duets inspired by the Baroque tradition of “tower music.” Some of the pieces have the character of music for outdoor performance, but others sound more like echoes from distant towers. The first piece starts with a fanfare and moves into a lively mirror canon in 7/8. The second piece features slowly shifting harmonies and explores the timbral possibilities of alternate fingerings. The third piece is a short game of patterns on an open fifth. The fourth piece features an introspective melody with echoes. The last piece contrasts a sharply dissonant fanfare with bluesy licks for harmon-muted trumpets.
